Leshy
AKA: Lesovik, Lesovy, Leshak, Lesnik, and Lesun
Origin: Slavic Europe (Russia,Ukraine, Poland, Bosnia, etc.)
History:
People of Slavic origin have great respect for the forests, which might explain how this mythical creature came to be. Leshy is a male spirit that dwells in the forests and is said to be the master of it. Their appearance is almost human-like, expect that he is very green. He has a long green bread made of vines, glowing green eyes, and bushy green eyebrows. The only thing that isn’t green about him is his blood, that’s blue. Leshy has the ability to grow as tall as the tallest tree in his forest or as small as a grass blade, although Leshy does tend to be taller in the center of the forest. Another distinct feature is that he has no shadow.
Don’t think that they’re alone in the forest, a Leshy can have a wife (Leshachikha) and even children (Leshanki). A Leshy is very possessive of its forest and hardly leaves it. And if another Leshy dares to inhabit his forest, they fight for control of the forest, tell-tale signs of this are fallen trees and scared animals. So it’s basically a “There can only be one” kind of thing.
What’s so weird about it?
A Leshy is a very mischievous spirit and loves playing tricks on humans who wander into his domain. While a Leshy has his own language, he can also speak languages of humans too, especially if he feels like tricking them into going the wrong way. Most of the time, he lets the person go. But when they don’t, they use the voices of loved ones and lure the lost traveler into a cave, where he makes them sick and tickles them to death.
That’s right, this great powerful master of the forest will tickle you to death.
What if I see one?
People don’t tend to really see a Leshy, mainly because they prefer to be heard and not seen. However, if you get sucked into his game and causes you to become lost, all you have to do is sit under a tree and put your clothes on backwards. And remember to put your left shoe on your right foot (some sources claim a Leshy does this too) and the Leshy will respect you and let you leave.
You can try befriending him by offering him a cross necklace. A plus to this one is that he’ll share with you the secrets and magic of the forest and will keep your cattle from getting lost.
Or you can set the forest behind you on fire and he’ll be so occupied with putting the fire out he’ll forget all about you. This one isn’t as eco-friendly though, but gets the job done if you’re really desperate. So remember kids, only you can prevent forest fires.
