Forewarning: I often make bad jokes and puns.
AKA:Chiang Shi, Kang Shi, and Goengsi
Jiang Shi (Chinese for “Stiff Corpse”) is a reanimated corpse that goes out at night to suck the qi, the life essence, out of people, thus killing them. They come back to life if the person was a horrible person or if they committed suicide. Staying true to their name their stiff body makes it hard for them to move their legs and arms easily, because of this they move around by hopping.
What’s so weird about them?
Jiang Shi can be described as a cross between a Western version of a vampire and zombie. But their appearance is what sets them apart. If they were raised shortly after death, they can pass as a normal looking person, if not then that’s where the zombie part comes in. Their flesh is rotten, what skin remains is ghostly pale, moss or mold growing on them. The more vampire-like appearances include long pale hair, their fingernails and tongues both long sharp and black. If one bites you, and you somehow manage to get away, don’t count yourself lucky yet, because they infected you and you’re going to turn into a Jiang Shi.
What if I see one?
There exists many methods to scare them off, many are very similar to those of western vampires and zombies. They are terrified of mirrors and you can set them on fire as well as throwing Azuki beans or other small objects at them because then they’ll stop to count them and you can get away. A rooster’s call can scare them off, and you should probably get a 15 cm wood block the size of a door will keep them out. A plus side about Jiang Shi is that they’re blind so if you hold your breath while they’re passing you, they won’t be able to tell you’re there.
